Anyone else overwhelmed with scheduling tours? I scheduled 3 tours during spring break - one a day. And then he dropped a bomb saying hes interested in Penn State. Thats a haul in one day. How should I do this? Go up the night before and do an early tour head home? Trying to wrap my brain around this since my husband works long hours and doesn't get paid when hes not working so he needs to take mom role on for Maverick with school duties. I never did this in college, I went local and lived at home: any tips, hints, etc??
If you can yes, if not focus local and then narrow down based on attributes of schools he has seen locally. If you can make it to schools further away to visit, he could apply without visiting, then if he is accepted visit before making final decision.
Many, but not all are interested in demonstrated interest. It can be shown in more ways than a visit. Virtual tours, reaching out to the area rep with a question not easily answered on the website, attending rep events at your school or in the area (Some will put on an event at a local hotel one night). We toured more local Sophomore year to determine the type of schools she liked and then did some far visiting over the junior/senior year summer to our more revised list. We did one trip flying into NC and traveling up to DC to 4-5 schools she wanted to visit. We were going to do a separate trip to PA, but she ended up not wanted to apply.
PA is similar to CT in that there are a lot of strong schools. Are there any other schools on the route that he is interested in? Maybe stay in that area a few days and explore schools.
I was also going to suggest making a trip based around multiple college tours. For example, we're hitting 3 Maine schools and 1 Boston school over April break. If she likes the more urban feel of Boston, we'll do another trip up to look at some others. Thinking of hitting up some NY schools (Ithaca, Skidmore, Hamilton) this summer. For things farther than that, we'll likely just do virtual tours and then, if something really strikes her fancy, try to set up a visit or she'll apply w/o an actual visit and we'll go if accepted.
